Just over two years after medicinal cannabis was legally passed in Missouri, patient numbers are already through the roof.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Missouri now has more than 100,000 licensed, legal medical marijuana consumers in the state. Nearly one quarter of these patients are also licensed to cultivate cannabis for themselves.

This number is far beyond what was predicted before the program began. A study by the Department of Economics at University of Missouri-Columbia predicted that by 2021 the state would have only 22,500 medical marijuana patients.

Nearly 66 percent of Missourians voted in favor of the state\’s medical marijuana law, Article XIV, in the November 2018 election. And now, marijuana users are seeing the impacts across the state.

According to GreenState, following legalization of medical marijuana, cannabis-related arrests in Missouri’s state parks have dropped by 60% last year.

People carrying medical marijuana cards issued by the state are allowed to use the drug in private settings at Missouri state parks. Following legalization, the Department of Natural Resources changed its enforcement policies in April 2020.
